Requiem for a Defunct System
n° 34-35, II/III 2009
From 2002 onwards, international
regulation and its deficiencies have been a consistent topic of interest
for the ‘solidarity social and economics focus’, as it is
supported by the Charles Léopold Mayer Foundation for Human Progress
(FPH). A first approach was conducted by 2005 under the impulse of the
Asia Pacific Centre (Tokyo), led by Mr Yoko Kitazawa. Since 2006, the
reflection has entered a second stage, as three organisations (Asia Pacific
Centre, Observatoire de la Finance et Universidad National Autonoma de
Mexico), still with FPH support, have decided to call for a joint conference
under the headline ‘Beyond Bretton Woods: Transnational Economy
in Search of New Institutions’, in retrospect, a somewhat visionary
theme. In effect, the initiators have agreed at the outset on the existence
of a growing gap between the actual functioning of the world economy increasingly
‘transnational’ in outlook and regulation and the oversight
structures still largely ‘inter-national’. These worries were
being confirmed, as the UNAM conference took place on 15-17 October 2008
on the background of the idea of systemic risk becoming a reality and
shattering the world economy.

The bilingual (French and English) review Finance & the Common Good/Bien Common was first published in 1998.
The review is mainly aimed at financial operators who are concerned by the ethical aspects of their activities and want to know how best to use their skills to contribute to the common good (see the Opening Editorial Statement).
In 2010, the review “Finance & the Common Good” joins and enhances the catalogue of De Boeck University editions (Brussels). In an era of great concern for the financial sector, the review will profit from the best visibility and the best distribution.
