Can Management Survive without Values?

Management faculties and business schools have sprung up throughout the world stimulated by the increasing success of transnational corporations. Such courses of study appeal to talented young people, as they evoke successful careers and material well being. To this end, there is but one condition, which is to concentrate exclusively on efficiency as sole mover to action. Management, as a package of knowledge and recipes, hinges around the search for efficiency as being its first and only commandment. However reluctantly, it must be admitted that management, having ceased to be just a toolbox, is increasingly assuming the shape of a world view, with a larger vision encompassing man, the corporation, economics and society. |

The current issue of ‘Finance & the Common Good/Bien Commun’, dwells on one of the deepest, although dimly perceived if at all, dimensions of our relationship with economics, i.e. the role and responsibility in bringing about such a crisis in economics and management sciences themselves and those who have long been teaching them to several generations of students. They have contributed to imposing throughout the world patterns of behavior, frames of thought and a value structure insensitive, or even contrary, to the common good, to an extent that the present crisis now reveals...

D’une valeur de 20'000 USD, le Prix Robin Cosgrove Ethique en Finance récompense des textes inédits relatant des propositions pour une manière innovante de promouvoir l’éthique dans la finance. Les jeunes professionnels, de moins de 35 ans, peuvent soumettre un papier en anglais ou en français, avant la deadline du 31 mars 2009 à minuit.
The Robin Cosgrove Prize for Ethics in Finance awards prize money of USD20,000 for creative and unpublished papers setting out innovative ideas to promote ethics in finance. Young professionals, aged 35 years or younger, can submit a paper, in English or in French, before the deadline of midnight, 31st of March 2009 (CET).
